Stigma and Discrimination
Stigma and discrimination against people with schizophrenia and other serious mental illnesses was identified as the number one issue for families, and the most important activity identified for the World Fellowship for Schizophrenia and Allied Disorders. The topic of stigma was addressed at the biennial conference in Jerusalem in May, 2000. Many ideas were expressed and examples of discrimination given, and ideas were published in our newsletter following the conference.
WFSAD will attempt to deal with the issue of stigma and discrimination through the sharing of stories, ideas and successful initatives from around the world. This section of our website hopes to raise some of the issues. At present we are not attempting any solutions, but those of you who have attempted to solve the stigma problem are invited to send in your ideas and comments. We hope to build a database of information that can be shared and developed.
